After 10 years operating in the Brazilian market as the only private fine art storage facility with museum standards of security and climate control, Clé Reserva Contemporânea is today approaching its maximum occupancy.
After the initial five years of implementation and paradigm shift, the trend towards greater demand for qualified spaces for storage and conservation is visible. An increase in the awareness of collectors and institutions regarding the importance of taking good care of their collections suggests a gain in maturity, which places Brazil at new levels in terms of the professionalisation of collection management.
As far as institutions, public and private, are concerned, the search for security of collections reflects a greater concern with compliance rules and the need to account to various stakeholders for the correct management of the collections. In this scenario, sending collections to ordinary warehouses ceases to be an acceptable option, as it does not guarantee proof that all the technical measures for the conservation and security of the artworks and objects are being taken.
At Clé Reserva, a rigorous climate control system maintains, throughout the whole year, the temperature and the relative humidity between 18 °C and 22 °C and 45% and 55%, respectively. These parameters, internationally recognised, represent the ideal museum standards for ensuring the optimised conservation of collections.
In a country with a tropical climate such as Brazil, where high relative humidity is a critical factor for the proliferation of fungi and pests, this environmental control becomes not only recommended but essential for the integrity and the longevity of the items we seek to preserve.
One of the secrets to maintaining this stable microclimate lies in the substantial investment in thermal insulation. In a manner analogous to a matryoshka doll, what can be observed in this singular space of preservation is, essentially, a thermally insulated warehouse built inside another warehouse. This ingenious structure ensures that external climatic fluctuations exert a minimal influence on the internal environmental conditions, which, in association with an intelligent automation system, provides continuous and efficient treatment and monitoring of the internal conditions.
Such technology has provided excellence in the conservation of collections without losing the commitment to sustainability through low energy consumption.
“This scenario has led us to consider that it is time to expand Clé's storage space and also the services offered to clients. We are in the planning phase of this expansion, but we are certain that the market is mature for a next step. We will have news soon!”, says Diogo Losito Mantovani, the company's CEO.
Clé's partners are the French company Chenue, world leader in fine art logistics, and the Brazilian Expomus, a pioneer in Brazil in carrying out cultural projects with a museological focus.
