The capital of Pará has entered the final stretch of preparations to host the 30th edition of the UN Climate Conference, COP30. In addition to the infrastructure works and the construction of the Green and Blue zones, which will host the conference's main events for civil society and heads of state, the city is also preparing a substantial cultural programme, aimed at showcasing the Amazon and its artistic expressions.
It is estimated that Belém will receive more than 40,000 people, coming from all parts of the world. The city is preparing cultural attractions, such as concerts and gastronomic circuits, and will offer visitors the exuberance of the forest and its products, with an emphasis on biodiversity.
Belém already has important cultural and scientific facilities, such as the Museu Paraense Emílio Goeldi, a reference in research into the natural resources of the Amazon, and the Bienal das Amazônias, launched in 2023, which will have a new edition during COP30. But the city will also gain new spaces.
The highlight is Porto Futuro, a space undergoing redevelopment on Belém's waterfront that will house the Museu das Amazônias, the Memorial da Navegação and the Centro de Inovação em Bioeconomia da Amazônia, as well as spaces for the creative economy and food culture, showcasing the richness of the cuisine of Pará.
At the Complexo Ver-o-Rio, which also borders the old port area, a 6,000 square metre space is receiving interventions by 21 artists, in 19 panels that make up the second edition of the Museu de Arte Urbana de Belém (MAUB), located on the prime route taken by the delegations travelling to the COP30 events.
