The initiative to develop an eco-designed cardboard for the storage and transport of artworks has earned the consortium Ça va cartonner the France 2030 award with the project Alternatives Vertes 2, for the ecological transformation of cultural practices. The consortium includes the French companies Chenue and EILOA – École Internationale de Logistique des Œuvres d’Art, both part of the international group to which Clé Reserva Contemporânea belongs.
The award will make it possible to develop a material that fully meets the conservation needs of artworks in storage or in transit, while at the same time reducing the ecological footprint of the activity compared with the use of plywood or epoxy currently most used for this purpose.
With the support of France 2030, the group will be able to study the physical and chemical properties of cardboard packing in a laboratory context and in real conditions, in order to guarantee ideal protection for the transport and conservation of artworks. The project will also seek to train conservation and restoration professionals in the informed choice of materials so as to minimise their impact on the environment.
In addition to EILOA and Chenue, the consortium brings together museums and other public and private institutions in France: the Musée du Quai Branly; the Research and Restoration Centre for the Museums of France, attached to the French Ministry of Culture; the Laboratoire Arc’Antique and the Musée Dobrée; the CRC – Conservation Research Centre; ARCP – the Photograph Restoration and Conservation Workshop of the City of Paris; the National Library of France; and LP Art.
