Under normal conditions, cleaning and preventive conservation care must be religiously observed so that particles suspended in the air do not remain deposited for long on canvases, sculptures or works on other supports. What, then, of renovation work? However small or well planned the work on a property may be, leaving an artwork at the mercy of the dust raised during the works is a terrible idea – not to mention the possibility of damage from the movement of materials and tools around the space. In this post, we talk about what to do with a collection during renovation work. ## Appropriate packing The best measure is to remove the pieces from the space, pack them in appropriate packing (which rules out bubble wrap) and keep them in storage in a room with controlled lighting and temperature. When the renovation work is on a large scale, or when the collector does not have a room with good storage conditions, it is possible to turn to private fine art storage hired for a fixed period. ## Temporary storage for renovation work Several of our clients take out temporary space rentals precisely for situations of this nature. What they have in common is the awareness that prevention is better than cure: an accident during renovation work, exposure to dust or storage and transport carried out without the necessary care can cause irreversible damage to an artwork – a loss that is not only financial, but above all cultural.
