The space joins the Pinacoteca's main building, known as Pina Luz, and the Estação Pinacoteca, housed in the former DOPS building. The complex now totals more than 22,000 square metres, 9,000 of them dedicated to exhibitions, making the museum the second largest in Latin America. The opening of the Pina Contemporânea is part of the celebrations of the 200 years of the Jardim da Luz, the oldest park in São Paulo, where the main building has stood for decades. The new space made use of the premises of a decommissioned state school and, with a bold architectural design, integrated the building into the park. Part of the exhibition space is entirely open to the public strolling through the park. Two main galleries house the other exhibitions, which according to the director Jochen Volz will “give value to Brazilian contemporary production”, with curatorship especially focused on the work of indigenous, women and black artists, as well as foreign artists whose work maintains a dialogue and synergy with contemporary themes. Admission to the Pina Contemporânea will be free, from Wednesday to Monday, for the first 30 days the new space is open. In the Grande Galeria, large-scale works from the Pinacoteca's collection, such as the celebrated Ttéia by Lygia Pape, are among the highlights. And the Galeria da Praça houses the first exhibition by the South Korean artist Haegue Yang in Latin America.
